“…getting married is to be a Princess for a day…Say yes to de dress!…every bride is beautiful…Team Bride… Bride to be… Your younger sister is married ¿what about you?… I would die if my daughter doesn’t leave my house as a bride… You can’t live with him before getting married…If he hasn’t given you the ring, then he is afraid of compromise… I’ll teach you how to cook his favorite dish… she is pregnant for sure if they’re preparing the wedding so fast… When will you get pregnant? You are already late… You won’t be the single auntie anymore!… Your biological clock is ticking… boost wedding weight loss… Will you love him, comfort him ,honor him, and keep him in sickness and in health?…You must be his oasis when he returns from work…”
All of this phrases that have been heard by the Artist, sometimes told directly to her and sometimes just as a witness, are written in Spanish in the wedding dress train.
The artwork image represents the traditional moment when the bride walks down the aisle, religious or not, and no one is holding her dress train anymore. She drags it alone as a metaphor of the psychological and stereotypical weight she will carry all by herself when it was actually acquired because of external agents that have influenced her decision of getting married, which will join her for the rest of her married life.
The bride, anatomically unfinished, looks back at us in a veiled atmosphere when she becomes aware of her burden and the path she is about to take towards her fiancé. He is the vanishing point that will absorb her time and space because of the patriarchal system, just like a black hole in the universe absorbs the spacetime that surrounds it.
“…casarte es ser princesa por un día…Say yes to de dress!…todas las novias son guapas…Team Bride… Bride to be… Tu hermana menor ya se casó ¿y tu?… Si no sale de mi casa de blanco, me muero… No vivas con él antes de casarte…Si no te ha dado el anillo es que le teme al compromiso… Te enseñaré a cocinar su plato favorito… Si la boda es rápida, seguro está embarazada… ¿Para cuando el bebé? Ya se tardaron… Ya no serás la tía solterona… Se te va a pasar el arroz… La dieta pre-boda… ¿Prometes serle fiel en la salud y la enfermedad?…tienes que ser su oasis cuando llegue del trabajo…”
Todas estas frases, escuchadas por la artista, a veces dichas a ella directamente y a veces solo siendo testigo de su pronunciamiento, se encuentran escritas en la cola del vestido de novia.
La imagen representa el tradicional momento en que una novia camina hacia el altar, a veces religioso y a veces no, cuando ya nadie sujeta la cola de su vestido y la arrastra ella sola. La escena hace alusión a la carga psicológica y de estereotipos que a partir de ahora llevará únicamente ella y que, sin embargo, han sido adquiridos desde agentes externos y que han influido en su decisión de contraer matrimonio, acompañándola durante el resto de su vida en pareja. La novia voltea a vernos, en un estado aún anatómicamente inacabado y en un ambiente velado, al darse cuenta de su carga y del camino que va a recorrer sola hacia su prometido, el punto de fuga que en el sistema patriarcal suele significar para ella el fin de su espacio y de su tiempo, lo mismo que un agujero negro en el universo significa para lo que tiene a su al rededor, en términos astrofísicos.
