Extinction: the birth of a still-life

The purpose of this artwork is to explore and symbolize the idea of ceasing to exist through diverse and simultaneous metaphors at different levels. The action of smelling to destroy, leaving a corpse, is proposed as a metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life due to its inevitable connection with death, through the display of a discontinued fragrance.

The representation of a living brain is connected by a red cord arranged like an electroencephalogram graph to the illustration of the perfume's ingredients (Rosa damascena, Jasminum officinale, Jasminum sambac, Jasminum grandiflorum, almizcle blanco (molécula C16H30O de Erodium moschatum, Angelica archangelica, Hibiscus y Mimulus) Cedrus atlantica y Vanilla Bourbon.) and it is also connected to real samples of the perfume scent.

By cutting and pulling the cord, the perfume samples are uncovered, activating the artwork and releasing, for the last time, the scent of that exact combination of ingredients. The journey ends in a horizontal line, like a flat EEG connected to another brain experiencing a stroke. It is the same brain as the first, but in a later space/time, linked to its past by that lifeline represented by the electroencephalogram.

In this way, the work has been given life and, at the same time, has been given death, as the scent of the samples evaporates, leaving a still life as a result.

El objetivo de esta obra es explorar y simbolizar la idea de dejar de existir con diferentes metáforas simultáneas y a diferentes niveles.

Se propone la acción de oler para destruir, dejando un cadáver, como metáfora de lo efímero de la vida por su inevitable unión con la muerte, mediante la exposición de una fragancia descontinuada del mercado.

La representación de un cerebro vivo está conectada, mediante un cordón rojo dispuesto como una gráfica de electroencefalograma, a la ilustración de los ingredientes del perfume (Rosa damascena, Jasminum officinale, Jasminum sambac, Jasminum grandiflorum, almizcle blanco (molécula C16H30O de Erodium moschatum, Angelica archangelica, Hibiscus y Mimulus) Cedrus atlantica y Vanilla Bourbon.) y muestras reales de su aroma.

Al cortar y tirar del cordón se destapan las muestras de perfume para activar la obra y desprender, por última vez, el olor de esa exacta combinación de ingredientes. El recorrido termina en línea horizontal como un EEG plano conectado a otro cerebro que manifiesta un ictus. Es el mismo cerebro que el primero pero en un espacio/tiempo posterior, unido a su pasado por esa línea temporal de vida que que representa el electroencefalograma.

De esta manera, se ha dado vida a la obra y a la vez se le ha dado muerte, pues el olor de las muestras se evapora dejando como resultado una naturaleza muerta.
